“Writing is far more dynamic and sensitive, and it engages human beings in different responses; the reader and the writer relate to each other in different ways.”

ACHMAT DANGOR LITERARY PRIZE OF 2024

The Achmat Dangor Literary Prize for 2024, and going forward, will be managed by Wits Creative Writing at the School of Literature, Language and Media in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand. The announcement of the winner takes place at a special biennial event which will also celebrate the life and legacy of Achmat.

The 2024/2025 Winner: Gabrielle Mudiwa

The Wits Creative Writing, the School of Literature, Language and Media, the Faculty of Humanities, and the Achmat Dangor Legacy Project co-hosted a special event to announce the winner of the second Achmat Dangor Literary Prize on 30 October 2024. The evening was also a celebration of the life and legacy of Achmat and included readings from his works by students Zwai Mgijima and Terry-Anne Adams; reflections on his cultural and literary contributions by Barbara Masekela and Ivan Vladislavić and culminated in the announcement of Gabrielle Mudiwa as the 2024/2025 winner. The shortlisted writers included: Veli Mnisi; Phelani Makhanya; Vuyokazi Ngemntu; Lerato Sibanda waga Matsomela; and Seitlhamo Thabo Motsapi.

Gabrielle is currently completing a joint Honours in African Literature and Creative Writing at Wits and the prize will enable Gabrielle to complete her MA in creative writing. For her MA project Gabrielle hopes to create a fictional archive drawn from her family history, blending various narrative forms to capture the fragmentation of memory and complexities of home and belonging in South Africa.
